Be Mindful about Diabetes Care

DIABETES IS NOT YOUR FAULT…

…there are options beyond weight loss, dieting, and carb restriction to stay healthy.

HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN YOU WERE TOLD THAT YOU HAD DIABETES OR PRE-DIABETES? Scared? Embarrassed? Upset? Angry?

GETTING A DIAGNOSIS LIKE DIABETES IS OFTEN INCREDIBLY STRESSFUL AND CAN COME WITH A VARIETY OF EMOTIONS.

It often comes with shame and blame. This can be particularly so for those of us in larger bodies - doctors and other health professionals may make assumptions about you.

Shame and Blame NEVER make us better.

Connecting with our bodies and minds in an honest, shame-free way ultimately leads to better health and better glucose control.

Living a full, healthy life with diabetes is possible without restriction - listening to your body and working with it, not against it, leads to better health.

DIABETES IS NOT YOUR FAULT.

I am DeAun Nelson and I am an naturopathic doctor in Portland, Oregon. My specialty is helping people to find health in whatever sized body they have without any focus on weight change. I also work with people who have challenges regulating their blood glucose. Often those who have blood glucose regulation issues are told to lose weight, restrict carbohydrates, and restrict calories. Ultimately, these tools lead to weight regain and often to an unhealthy relationship with food. I want to see everyone address their health with a sense of curiosity and self-compassion.

I KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE THAT:

…when people are ashamed of their bodies, they may find it more challenging to care for themselves as well as they would if they felt better about their bodies.

…when people are able to work with their bodies and focus on supporting themselves they can find health whether their weight changes or not.

…weight loss itself does not help manage diabetes, but self care does.

…shame does not improve health, it makes us more ill.

…when people put aside shame and blame, they are able to find the health they seek.
